7 Steps to a Successful Dental Crown Procedure

1. Consultation

The process starts with a consultation to evaluate your tooth and determine if a crown is the best restorative treatment for you. 2. Tooth Prep

Dental crowns are hollow, tooth-shaped caps placed over existing teeth. To accommodate a crown, we’ll need to modify your tooth’s structure. 3. Impressions

4. Placement of Temporary Crown

We’ll cover your prepped tooth with a temporary crown while your permanent crown is being made. Temporary crowns are generally made of composite resin material. They’re attached to your tooth with mild adhesive, protecting it from harm during this interim period.  

5. Fabrication of Permanent Crown

Your crown will be custom-crafted from ceramic, metal, porcelain or porcelain fused to metal material, using the impressions as a guideline for a comfortable, accurate fit. The design and fabrication process can take up to two weeks to complete.

6. Permanent Crown Fitting & Placement

When your permanent crown is ready, we’ll call you back into our office for a fitting. Your temporary crown will be removed, and the permanent one fitted in its place. We’ll check the alignment of your crown, ensure it fits comfortably and adjust your bite, if needed. Then we’ll cement your new crown in place permanently.

7. Aftercare

With good oral care, quality ceramic and porcelain crowns can last 10 to 15 years.
